Never been to Jellico?? Jellico began as a railway point along the
Canadian Northern Railway (CNR) in the early 20th Century. In
1914, Arthur J Hills, a superintendent with CN Rail officially named the
settlement to honor Admiral John Rushworth Jellicoe, the British Royal
Navy's commander in chief during the First World War. At the time,
the railway was rapidly expanding across Northwestern Ontario and many
small communities emerged as siding points, maintenance stops, or supply
hubs. Jellicoe was one of these strategic locations along Highway
11, west of Geraldton, serving as a waypoint for transportation,
forestry activity and later small scale tourism.
